The Jewel of the Garden Route

Situated in the Western Cape approximately five hours from Cape Town to the West and two hours from Port Elizabeth to the East. The beautiful coastline is probably one of the most spectacular in the world.  It is perfect for the adventurous tourist as well as those who just prefer lazing in the sun.

Plett has a reputation for being the playground for the South African jet set during the Christmas season but its real attraction is the raw natural beauty around it. The exceptional climate – one of the best in the world – ensures days of warm comfort and pleasurable evenings, seldom found elsewhere.

When Portuguese explorers first discovered Plett they called it Bahia Formosa or “beautiful bay”.  They named it so because of the sheltered cove with wide, white beaches, the Outeniqua mountain range and wildlife-rich forests. The coastline remains unspoilt today because despite the luxury properties and polo fields the planners have limited building above a certain height so apart from one hotel there are no high rise developments.

The area has fifteen private and public nature reserves and the Tsitsikamma National Park is internationally recognised for its forests which include the giant Outeniqua yellowwood. Hikers from all over the world are drawn to the area for its rugged coastline and wonderful hiking trails.

Eat, Play, Love

Brimming with superb restaurants, boutique shops, fabulous activities and spectacular beaches, Plettenberg Bay is the ideal holiday getaway.

There is a wide range of excellent restaurants from French style patisseries to slick pan-Asian food. At Enrico’s at Keurbooms you can have simple fish dishes, salads and wood-fire pizzas, Bramon Vineyard provides popular picnic-style lunches set in the vineyard and for exquisite modern South African food Nguni is always good.  There are numerous other culinary treats in and around Plett to tempt holiday makers.  Wine lovers are well catered for too.

If you want an action packed holiday then you will love Plettenberg.  Fishing, boating, scuba diving, golfing, polo, riding, tennis, gliding, abseiling, birdwatching, mountain biking and bungi jumping are all available in or near Plett.

If you prefer a less energetic holiday but want to explore you could drive out to Old Nick Village (www.oldnickvillage.co.za) to shop for local crafts or take a whale and dolphin spotting excursion and see more of the spectacular coastline (www.oceansafaris.co.za). The Elephant Sanctuary (www.elephantsanctuary.co.za) offers close encounters with rescued elephants.  Springtide Charters (www.springtidesailing.com) organises sunset cruises on a 50ft yacht from Knysna Lagoon.  If you take a short drive out to The Crags (www.cruisethecrags.co.za) you will need more than a day to appreciate Monkeyland, the Snake Sanctuary, a mohair factory shop, Tenikwa – a cat sanctuary and Birds of Eden.

Alternatively you may want to do absolutely nothing apart from enjoy the sunshine, the beaches and a good book.
